CE-craft Recreational Craft Directive compliance program

CE-craft is a unique program which has been written specifically for narrow boats, wide beam canal boats and Dutch barge replicas between 6m and 24m in length.

What are the benefits of using CE-craft?
  • Cuts down paperwork! It takes the drudgery out of preparing RCD documentation.
  • It provides a framework for the boat fitter to work to and breaks the CE marking process down into a series of simple steps.
  • It puts the boat builder in charge. He can make his own decisions on compliance issues.
  • Used at the planning stage can eliminate compliance problems before the fit out starts.
  • All necessary calculations are carried. Verdicts are given as to whether the results meet the requirements of the standards.
  • It automatically selects the standards which are used to show compliance.
  • Data is only entered once - hugely reducing the risk of errors.
  • The Declaration of Conformity is generated automatically and contains all the necessary boat data along with a complete list of standards used.
  • Most of the Owner's Manual is generated as information is entered in the Technical File. Additional detail can easily be inserted if required.
  • Once the Technical File is set up for a particular type of boat, customising the Owner's Manual for subsequent boats is a cinch.
  • CE-craft clearly displays in a recognised format all information required by Notified Bodies.
  • The cost of an annual licence for CE-craft could be less than the cost of a single visit from a surveyor.
  • CE-craft always provides up-to-date standards to work to.

What type of boats can be assessed by CE-craft?

CE-craft has been specially written for assessing inland waterways craft constructed in steel or aluminium. There are two versions available: Category D version can be used to assess narrow boats, wide beam canal cruisers and Dutch barge replicas which are for use on sheltered waters only. Category C version which in addition to the category D capability, can be used for assessing boats such as Dutch barge replicas which are intended for inshore use in appropriate conditions. Builders of category C boats over 12m in length will require the services of a Notified Body to be able to CE mark their boats.

Is CE-craft easy to use?

CE-craft is based on an Excel spreadsheet. It requires basic computer skill to operate it - however, a good knowledge of boat fitting is required! Non-professional boat fitters will find CE-craft easy to use, but are advised to retain a suitably qualified surveyor to give them guidance where necessary. Apart from simple tasks such as working out the size of tanks, CE-craft carries out all calculations - no great mathematical skill is required The program comes bundled with a User's Guide, an RCD Guidelines manual and access is available to all necessary standards. Basic parameters are selected from drop-down lists or tick boxes. Data is entered by simply typing into cells many of which have hover notes which give guidance.
To be able use CE-craft, the following are required:

  • Microsoft Excel 2003 or later
  • 256MB ram
  • Approximately 15MB of disk space for each Technical File
